Described by Carducci as a land of wise men and poets, Scandiano is the most populous municipality after the capital from which it is only 13 km away. Scandiano is also the hometown of Romano Prodi…
Scandiano is described by Carducci as a land of savants and poets. In fact, Matteo Maria Boiardo (the poet of Orlando Innamorato) , Lazzaro Spallanzani a naturalist scientist, and coming to the present day, Scandiano is the birthplace of Romano Prodi.
It is the most populous municipality after the capital city from which it is only 13 km: and is located on the border between the hilly belt and the high plain. We begin ours. walk through the historic center from the arcaded square named after Lazzaro Spallanzani, the great researcher born in the town in 1729, considered the founder of experimental biology and author of important research on artificial insemination.
In the center of the square, a statue depicts the distinguished scientist. Heading up Corso Garibaldi, one of the oldest streets in the center, we come to the imposing clock tower built by Feltrino Boiardo in 1430 as the gateway to the ancient village. In the same year Via Magati, formerly Via del Castello, along which the nobles of Scandiano lived, was laid out. Prominent among them is the birthplace of Spallanzani with a Baroque-style facade, interior dating back to the early 17th century, with grand staircases loggias and a courtyard.
A few meters walk and you are in Boiardo Square, where the fortress and the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built by Feltrino Boiardo in 1430 and containing paintings by Reggio Emilia painters several tombs of the Boiardo family and a splendid Baroque carved wooden altar. The fortress built at the end of the 12th century by the Fogliano family as a place of defense, which is why it was surrounded by a moat and equipped with a drawbridge, became over time a Renaissance stately home. The work of expansion embellishment and renovation peaked at the time of Matteo Maria Boiardo author of the poem the Orlando Innamorato and was completed under the Thiene.
Also near the church is Rijeka Square, created by the demolition of the Jewish ghetto districts, which achieved particular development during the 18th century. Although very close to Scandiano, Fellegara is a different world that tastes of the countryside. The most interesting historical evidence is a nineteenth-century villa, Villa Babilonia, owned by Count Rangone The noble family had a mill built in the sixteenth century with an adjoining oil mill, which exploited the waters of the nearby canal. Fellegara is also home to the largest vinegar factory in the Reggio area owned by the Cavalli family and is confirmed as one of the most vocated places for the production ofTraditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia.
