About 60 kilometers from our farmhouse, and precisely at the splendid medieval agricultural court of Giarola in Collecchio, is the Pasta Museum, an interesting ethnographic museum that illustrates the history and evolution of one of our country’s gastronomic excellences and the culture that has accompanied it from its birth until today. The Corte di Giarola is an ancient agro-processing center located on the right bank of the Taro River.
Italy is one of the largest consumers of pasta in the world, with an average of about 30 kg per person per year. Moreover, it is in several areas of the country (Sicily, Liguria, Naples, and Bologna) that dry durum wheat semolina pasta of Middle Eastern origin has developed over the course of centuries. The link between pasta and the land is a story that originated in 1877, when Barilla, a leading pasta company, was founded in Parma, which among other things contributed to the creation of the museum. In fact, the facility also houses part of the objects and machines that Pietro Barilla had sought out with the aim of creating a collection that would tell the story of pasta.
The exhibition itinerary is divided into ten sections that guide to the historical, technological and cultural knowledge of pasta. The first section is dedicated to wheat, its characteristics and cultivation methods. The second section is devoted to milling and the various types of mills. The third is devoted to the homemade preparation of fresh pasta. The fourth illustrates the various stages of dry pasta production. The fifth shows production methods in an artisan workshop in Emilia in the last century. The sixth presents the theme of automation. The seventh illustrates the way of forming more than one hundred different pasta shapes. The eighth is devoted to pasta communication. The ninth is devoted to gastronomy. Finally, the last section offers an overview of pasta in art and culture.
Among the exhibits in the museum are the oldest industrial pasta sample preserved to date, dating back to 1837, and an entire original pasta factory from the mid-19th century that has been perfectly restored.
