In Soragna, in the province of Parma, specifically inside the Corte Castellazzi, a historic 19th-century farmhouse in the shadow of the Meli-Lupi fortress, is the Museo del Parmigiano-Reggiano, a very interesting ethnographic museum dedicated to the most famous Italian cheese in the world. The Castellazzi Court consists of the farmhouse with stable and barn and the dairy, inside which are the tools and implements used in the processing of Parmigiano Reggiano.
Opened in 2003, the museum, which is part of the Food Museums circuit, presents to the public material collected in all five provinces where Parmigiano-Reggiano is produced: Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna west of the Reno River and Mantua south of the Po River. On display are more than 120 objects dating from the second half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century and about 100 period drawings and photos illustrating the evolution of milk processing techniques, the stages of maturing and marketing, and the important role of the Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano in safeguarding quality.
Reachable in about 50 minutes from our farmhouse, the museum allows visitors to learn more about the great heritage of art and tradition behind a wheel of Parmigiano. The exhibition itinerary is divided into sections set up in the rooms created from the three rooms originally used for the production of the cheese factory: room A in the circular building, dedicated to a description of the original Soragnese cheese factory and the early stages of cheese making; room B in the basement parlour, where a large number of illustrative panels on the history of Parmigiano and its gastronomic use are set up; and room C in the elevated milk chamber, focusing on the techniques of beating and maturing the cheese wheels.
There is also a refreshment area and a museum-shop, where you can taste the unsurpassed Parmigiano Reggiano, among other things. In addition, several rustic rooms attached to the museum house the Museum of Farming Civilization, which displays a collection of tools and everyday objects from the farming civilization related to food issues.
