Located just over 15 kilometers from our farmhouse, Castellarano is a charming village rich in history nestled in the green hills in the lower part of the Secchia valley. The settlement is of prehistoric origin although the settlement most likely dates back to the Roman period. Remains have been found on its territory that confirm the presence of primitive peoples, Ligurians, Etruscans, Boi Gauls and, of course, Romans. In 1039 Castellarano became the property of Marquis Bonifacio di Canossa, and upon his death it passed to his daughter Matilde, who seems to have commissioned the construction of the Rocca, later profoundly transformed over the centuries.
The town has a charming medieval historic center that is excellently preserved and dotted with cobbled alleys. The historic center is surrounded by the Rocchetta, a small 15th-century fortress, owned by the municipality, from which started a circle of defense walls that encircled the hill, still partly visible, and which has a defense moat on its main side into which the Rio di Castellarano once flowed. The Rocchetta formed the entrance to the ancient town through its three gates: the Porta Maggiore, the Porta Castellana and the Porta della Torre della Rosa.
Other places of definite interest are: the Rocca, whose current appearance dates back to the 1970s; the Torre dell’Orologio, an ancient watchtower built in the Middle Ages to control navigation along the Secchia River, whose main feature is the clock, with single-hand dials on each side, dating back to the 18th century; and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, in late Baroque style dating back to the 1600s, when it was rebuilt on a very old parish church.
